An Essential Functions Test [EFT] is typically used to identify, through the demonstration of all activities of a job description, whether an injured worker is sufficiently physically recovered to return to full duty.
Many Physicians prefer such an objective physical performance test on which to base their decision whether to release a worker back to work.
The evaluator obtains the specific job description [may provide consultative services to the employer to properly develop this], reviews the more recent medical treatment record and then will arrange the testing or work simulation stations to be compatible with the job tasks.
The worker will physically perform the tasks, the quantified results documented then compared against the job description.
This results in a straight forward “meets or does not meet the essential functions of the job” determination. Any deficiencies identified are documented and may be used in additional treatment.
